US EPA에서 5백만~1천7백만 명의 미국인이 식수를 통해 노출될 수 있는 과염소산염에 대한 첫 번째 국제기준을 개발할 것이라고 발표했다. EPA는 제안된 과염소산 규정과 그에 수반하는 분석을 발표할 예정이며 18개월 이내에 최종 규정을 공표할 것으로 기대된다. 현재 규정된 물질로는 benzene; carbon tetrachloride; 1,2- dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane, dichloromethane, tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, vinyl chloride가 있으며, 아직 규정되지 않은 물질로는 aniline, benzyl chloride, 1,3-butadiene, 1,1-dichloroethane, nitrobenzene, oxirane methyl, 1,2,3-trichloropropane, urethane이 있다.
